Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.0 Return of the Ancients will go live at 1 PM PST on May 29th. This update is packed with changes, and you’ve probably already heard about some major overhauls, such as the rework of all existing League mechanics, which lay a solid foundation for the late game.
In addition, there are two brand new Ascendancies, Spiritwalker and Martial Artis, which are likely to become popular starting choices in Return of the Ancients.
However, among the many changes, there are some that may seem minor at first glance but are important changes that have a significant impact on gameplay and experience, and are often overlooked. In this article, we’ll discuss five changes in Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.0 that you might have missed. Let’s take a look at IGGM.

Swap Resistances
After the update, you can switch resistances in PoE 2. Upgrading gear is a big deal in the game, especially for meticulously built builds. Besides damage modifiers, appropriate elemental resistance modifiers are also crucial.
A faulty modifier can render your gear unusable or force you to switch to something else. Fortunately, after patch 0.5.0, if this happens, you can easily revert elemental resistance modifiers to other modifiers.
Using Remnants in the new league mechanics, you can craft three different Fluxes, allowing you to replace one elemental resistance with another of the same tier without breaking your gear. If you played PoE 1, you’ll find this somewhat similar to Harvest crafting option for resistance swapping.
Life Leech Mechanism Significantly Nerfed
Life Leech mechanics have been significantly nerfed in Path of Exile 2. All types of Life Leech, whether health, energy shield, or mana, can now only activate once. This means they are no longer stacking but only apply once.
IGGM gives you an example: if you’re leeching life and trigger Leech effect twice with one attack, once for 5% Leech and once for 6% Leech, you won’t gain the total 11% Life Leech effect; you’ll only gain the highest effect, 6%.
Furthermore, the Life Leech cap is now set at 40,000. This means that regardless of the damage you deal, your life regeneration will always be calculated as 40,000, unless your damage is less than 40,000. The logic is simple: if you have 5% Life Leech, one attack deals 100,000 damage, and another deals 40,000 damage, both attacks will restore 2,000 life.
Deflect Stacking Improves Damage Reduction
The next small but impactful change you might have missed in Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.0 notes is Deflect stacking.
Before the update, the formula for calculating the total deflection percentage was (1 – (A * 0.9) / (A + 0.2 * X)) * 100. Here, A represents the enemy’s hit rate, and X represents the character’s deflection value. Using this formula, even with deflection values exceeding 3 million (which is impossible), the total deflection percentage was only around 99.7%.
After the update, the new formula is (1 – A / (A + 0.12 * X)) * 150. The values of A and X remain the same, but with the new formula, a smaller value is needed to achieve a 100% deflection percentage. For example, using the new formula, a deflection value of 33,360 is needed to reach 100%.
Therefore, IGGM believes the new deflection formula works in a way that benefits all players, allowing you to achieve a higher deflection rate with less investment. This allows you to save resources for other defensive measures or directly increase your damage output.
Corruption and Sanctification Affect Affix Values
The effect of corrupting an item can vary from person to person. You might obtain affixes that perfectly match your build, including stats unattainable through any other means. However, it can also lower existing stats, rendering the item unusable. Similarly, Omen of Sanctification randomizes individual affixes but doesn’t change any item attributes.
After PoE 2 Return of the Ancients update, the way affix values are altered using Corruption or Sanctification is no longer random. Instead, each value is multiplied by a preset, fixed value. The results can still be good or bad, but the range of choices is wider.
In any case, Corruption or Sanctification is a high-cost, high-reward crafting activity, but it’s not recommended to gamble with it in the early game.
If you want a unique item, you can buy cheap POE2 currency from IGGM.com to craft your own unique item and reduce the risk. This provides the most convenient way to obtain Currency, which is not only money but also crucial for character progression in the early game.

Full Atlas Tree Allocation
GGG typically doesn’t allow players to fully allocate the passive tree, but after patch 0.5.0, Atlas tree allows this, offering a richer tree with multiple talent point options. By completing dedicated endgame missions, you should be able to acquire a significant number of talent points to enhance your maps.
Being able to allocate all talent points also means you don’t need to frequently switch talent trees to enhance different League mechanics. However, this also reduces your ability to respec, so IGGM recommends prioritizing nodes relevant to your current season’s mechanics.
This concludes IGGM’s detailed explanation of some often overlooked details in Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.0 Return of the Ancients, hoping to provide a deeper understanding of this update. There’s a lot of content, so take your time to explore. Let’s look forward to May 29th!
